[Information] Intellectual Property Law Seminar Series / CPS Research Group“Brand Protection in Africa in the Age of E-commerce”(October 22, 2024)

Keio University welcomes Prof. Ann, one of the leading German law researchers of patent and trade secrets to our campus again this year to speak to audiences in Tokyo.
Professor Ann has visited Africa many times and spent time there.
Africa is the world’s second-largest continent after Asia, and it has the greatest potential for development in the coming decades. However, the current African market is a destination for all kinds of pirated products, from luxury goods such as fashion and sports shoes to products that have an immediate impact on consumer safety, such as automotive and aircraft spare parts and medical products.
Prof. Ann’s lecture will focus on the current situation in Africa and will discuss what developed countries can do for Africa’s lack of modern technology, pharmaceuticals, and also consumer goods, and what role intellectual property protection may play in this context. Firstly, point of interest shall be the main channels through which pirated goods enter Africa. Then Africa’s regional diversity and existing protection mechanism shall be discussed, and that includes e-commerce. Thirdly, enforcement mechanisms shall be addressed, including corruption as their biggest structural challenge. Last but not least, options for Japanese companies shall be covered. How shall they deal with piracy when expanding into Africa?
